Imperial Guard Heavy Sentinel

I have been a fan of Jason Richard's work for some time ever since I rediscovered WH40K. I was the one who asked for the instructions for the IG dreadnaught/ Heavy Sentinel in 2001. This request prompted Jason to publish the instructions on his website. These can be found at http://www.miniaturespace.net/vdr_talarn_heavy_sentinel.htm. Please drop him a line encouraging to keep up his good work. Since then I have been collecting (mainly money) for my project based on these guidelines.

Note I do modeling as a relaxing pastime in my busy life so I think I have been working on this about two years already.

I have tried to pick out the best images this being said some pictures are not very good, sorry.

2007-02-21 Imperial Guard Heavy Sentinel

You know after all this time I must say painting is not as great as I had hoped. Let's face the best way to kill a great model is to trash the paint job. My painting still looks like a preadolescent smacking paint on a NASCAR snap tight kit or it just sucks. I am very nervous at the quality I may or probably will not give these great looking models.

This model will stay black as it is a commisar's steed.

This is my favorite version it actually has life.

2006-06-26 Imperial Guard Heavy Sentinel

My wife gave me the ultimate compliment this Father’s Day (US holiday), “you total patience and understanding”.

I have begun letting my daughter, age six, paint and work on the models with me. This weekend in her excitement a set of legs hit the floor and one piece became three. My daughter broke into tears. She thought this was the end of her getting to model with me.

I told her it gave us a chance to make the model stronger by using an internal support frame. I showed her how we would pin the foot and the hip.

When it was all said and done she was happier than I was because she knew we would be modeling again.

Ironically I think all three sets of legs are now pinned. I think I will make doing the hip pin a standard in the future.

2006-06-10 Imperial Guard Heavy Sentinel

Since I have last posted much has changed. I have relocated to a new job and new area. The unpacking and organizing is still progressing going on two months. It is not the big things that need to be placed but the small like my modeling tools and models.

I finally made a decision on my next step. It is a step back but a good step. I have been eyeballing how I intend to join the three sections of the Sentinel, the legs to the body and the heavy weapons to the body (and maybe the cupola to the body). The most direct approach glue and forget, I regret doing this on my IG Dread and now curbed my enthusiasm at completing the project. Throughout this process I have already made three basic Dreadnaught weapons, two laser cannons and an assault cannon. I have also made several custom weapons a heavy flamer, plasma weapons and dual auto cannon. I wanted a solution that could switch these in and out. I also wanted to be able to remove the legs from the body for transportation. At first I was going with the friction method the weapon has a dowel and hole and live with the glued legs to the body. I am still working on a possible solution for attaching the cupolas with magnets. Since this is an after thought the process is harder. My solution was something I have been reading about on several sites: Games Works Black Gobbo, Hobby Hawk, and the modeling sites: Boot Camp and Work In Progress to name a few. I used magnets, not just any magnets but Rare Earth Magnets.

I ordered my magnets from K&J Magnetics. They have a wide variety and from what I can tell so far great prices on a great product. I purchased 100 D21 and 25 D41. I will detail the usage later in the entry. I spent sometime about two weeks before ordering measuring, calculating and thinking about what I wanted from the modifications. I chose the D21 because of its general good usage and easy size to fit into tight spots. I chose the D41 first I wanted something with pull and second by grabbing a drill bit for size comparisons decided it was not too big. I received my $20 order last week and was again thrilled. I spent some time over the week visualizing my modification for the Heavy Sentinel.

The first sacrificial lamb was actually my IG Dread. I have had that beast almost done for months. Go here and see the blog. My first cut into the sentinels was into the connection for the legs and body. I quickly realized that 1/4” is just about the diameter of the half-sphere shape of the mold. There was no room for mistakes and I made a few.

I need to get a 1/4" hand drill of some sort that I think I will have to hand make, I mean I only need a handle to slip over the neck of the bit.

One comment, I did not have this happen yet but when using magnets check you polarity. Magnets have a negative and positive pole. When in doubt check, and then check again.

All my magnet work took so long because I averaged three checks per magnet. I first took the body of one of the sentinels. I filed the wheel down a little for the part that points inward on the tank the axel usually fits into it. This can be seen on one of my previous posts. I had to file off the lip and the piece of blue sprue. I placed the magnet right on top of the filed area. On my APEX model I found that by placing the magnet on the body or hull side raised and indenting the magnet on the weapon, the seating and securing of the weapon was easier and smoother. I then replicated the building process on the other two hulls ensuring that the magnets all had the same polarity directions. This allows me to swap weapons at will.

I worked on getting all the magnets on the weapon to be the same polarity direction. After the hull magnets were finished I was able to ensure polarity.
The weapons were a bit easier. I drilled the 1/4" hole in the side of the weapons, smashed greenstuff until the right depth was set, used the stack of magnets to extract the magnet and then glued the magnet back in place.

Next time on to the painting. I am using recommendation I have found on HobbyHawk to paint.

2006-01-02 Imperial Guard Heavy Sentinel

Well Christmas break allowed for several opportunities to model.

I worked mainly on appearances. When creating the Heavy Sentinel the last one I went for a more running pose. After I had painted the feet I noted that the footprint was poor, in fact it did not have a foot tread. It was a real revelation when I was looking at it. Out came the “green stuff”. I had to use a small bit for each toe section so it would look like the parts might move. I know that my putty work is not the greatest but I like the affect.

I have also been working on a Commissar. I used a canteen for the front neck guard and an officer’s head on a Cadian body. I cut the torso off of the standing tank commander, I was sure to not to cut the ammo pouches on the belt. I glued the pistol from the heavy weapons spru. I am working on the hands trying to position them to look like he is caressing his pistol.

2005-11-20 Imperial Guard Heavy Sentinel

Ok, I finally cop-out. When GW released the new version of the Space Marine Predator tank I loved the main turret. Now I had already built my hatches but was disappointed by the result. I still plan to use them but I really liked the GW ones. I have been sitting on this project from well before summer but I decided it was time to complete it. This version of the Heavy Sentinel is for the Commisar. I hope to combine a Cadian uniform, some green stuff and a Commisar head. Either that or order the Commisar Tank commander. I will be working on him soon.

I have also purchased the ForgeWorld Cadian tank commander. Lets just say I was hoping for better. The hardest part was taking the tank commander from the LemanRuss Tank spur cutting off the lower body and carving it up so that the outline of the legs meet the bottom hatch right.

This other commander is the directions officer(whatever) from one of the Cadian heavy weapons units and a sergeant's arm notice the stripes in the third picture. If you look you can see the cut I made to pin the hand holding the binoculars. I gave him a way oversized set of binoculars. When I was in the 1st CAV the tank commanders all had these oversized binoculars.

2005-03-06 Imperial Guard Heavy Sentinel

What can be said... I have been concentrating on my IG Dread seen at IG Dread. I have also been hemming and hawing over the hatches I have made. While I do not hate the custom built hatches, I am not entirely in love with them. I have been looking at ordering the Hatch Spure Land Raider Sprue C (99390101004).

I have based the models in black, since I was doing the IG Dread. I will be painting all three in a similar paint scheme so to build them into one army.

2005-02-12 Imperial Guard Heavy Sentinel

What a weekend of fun I have finished the second cupola and started the third. I now have to work on the cupola weapons. Two of the weapons will have the gun the third the twin link bolters.

I have also been working on other projects simultaneously this was my main focus this weekend.
